Der in Indien geborene Jurist war politischer und geistiger Führer der indischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegung gegen Englands Kolonialmacht. Bereits als junger Anwalt in Sudafrika, wo Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi für die Rechte der eingewanderten Inder kämpfte, entwickelte er die Prinzipien des "Satjagraha", dem unbedingten Festhalten an der Wahrheit, das "Ahimsa", die Gewaltlosigkeit, sowie noch weitere ethische Forderungen wie "Swaraj", die individuelle als auch politische Selbstkontrolle und Selbstbestimmung.
